A sneak peek into the back stage drama

About a year ago, while sitting in my office canteen during lunch, the Pantuvarali ragam (a scale in the Carnatic music system) kept playing in my mind. Inspired, I began weaving words together, and soon a couple of lines formed. When I got home, I ended up creating an entire song. I had recently bought Riyaz Studio, a software for tabla that loops beats, which helped me record loops and then sing over them. Without a good microphone, I recorded an initial version of the song, "Darshan Do," using an ordinary internet mic and my new multitrack recording software, N-Track. I shared this very crude version with friends and family, who were quite moved by it. This encouraged me to take the project more seriously.

After some initial hiccups, I connected with some people in the film music direction circle who agreed to assist me in making an album. In a month, I wrote five full songs. What started as a free experimental work began to take the shape of a more professional undertaking. By July 2009, the album was ready with all the backing orchestra; it just needed proper vocal recording and mixing. However, after some attempts with my new recording gear and sending it to mix engineers, I wasn’t satisfied with the final product. I realized it was important to be present during the mixing process. Unable to travel to India at that time, I decided to put the project on hold.

In May this year, I decided to restart the project, aiming to release it by Krishna Janmashtami (the auspicious day of Lord Krishna's birth). The project consumed my thoughts and dreams. One night, I dreamt that Ganesh Rajagopalan, one of the greatest violinists in the country, played an instrumental version of one of my songs. Inspired, I contacted Ganesh Ji, shared my vision, and sent him a sample. To my delight, he responded positively and agreed to work with me.

Finally, in India, we completed the project together. The album was successfully released on Janmashtami Day as planned, under the popular label Swathi Sanskriti Series (http://www.kalakendra.com/). It’s now available in the market.

Thank you for sharing this joy with me. Your appreciation encourages me to continue creating more music.
